I bought a foam mattress from Amazon but it was too firm. I've tried buying some memory foam as a topper, but it's such a low density that my hips and other heavy areas compress it immediately, so I'm back on a firm foam mattress at those pressure points. This standard "regular" density non-memory foam has just enough density to provide some support so I don't fall and hit that hard foam, but it's soft enough to support the combination of that upper and the Hard foam underneath to make comfortable and healthy bed - not too hard and not too soft. Our backs have some natural curves so I don't think a flat, rock hard bed fits well, rather one with excessive sag and for me this topper has helped me adequately sink into that 'just right' range.
