In the picture the light can be terribly bright/overwhelming. I work at night and in low light conditions; This thing is less than 2 feet from my head and almost at eye level. The light doesn't bother me. You have to look at the switch for a moment to see if the light is on. I have no idea how it diffuses the LED light, but it does the job well. The construction of this thing is aluminum, which is very nice. Power cord is optional; If you need to connect something heavy, you probably need a power cord. I have no problem using a keyboard, optical mouse and a few gamepads that only get power from the USB connection. This thing worked straight away with no problems; The power buttons worked exactly as I intended.
