My stray tabby cat came into my garden about 9 months ago. Although we have reduced his absence from home to a few hours a day. Even on the coldest winter days, he insists on going outside. To make sure he was safe until we let him back in, I set up a booth, covered it with a tarp, and put one of those mats inside. I wrapped a large thick towel around the inner perimeter. He seems to be really enjoying the setup. The blanket gives me confidence that he is protected and warm because it reflects his body heat. The carpet makes a crackling noise which I thought might bother him, but it doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest. Also, my cat loves the toy that comes with the mat.
