The suction cup holder has a super sticky silicone base. It helps it stick to almost any surface, even porous surfaces that suction cups won't stick to. There is a very sensitive sensor on the front. So when your phone isn't in it, it will open and short out with almost any movement within 1ft of it. Once he has a phone it's not a problem, he's not sensitive anymore. The rear sensor turns off immediately when you touch it. So don't wrap your hand around the phone unless you want to pick it up. The charger easily charges my Note 10+ through the case. Better than my previous charger, the iOttie, I might add, it's also a prettier and more functional stand at half the price. My only concern is that the charger has a motor and multiple sensors as it will last a long time. There is no guarantee like with iOttie.
