Review on AKG K701 Superb Stereo Headphone - Premium Reference Class (Level 1) by Maejima Riko ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The item is of good quality, there is only one minor defect.

If we talk about sound quality, then further searches in more expensive models will not lead to any noticeable improvement. And in relation to models that are equal in price, these headphones stand out sharply in that they perfectly convey the scene not in your head, but as if in front of you; the sound is very transparent and detailed, but not analytically cold, but exactly what it should be in a room with people and various objects - it is difficult to convey in words. I have long had the famous and popular FOSTEX T50PR headphones ($260) among music lovers. So, after AKG K701, the sound in these FOSTEX seems to have passed through cotton wool, flat and inexpressive, sounding right in the head (due to the close approach of the membrane to the ear). The AKG K701 has a membrane that is very far from the ear, larger in size, and therefore provides such a wonderful three-dimensional sound picture. Low frequencies are soft, but clear and, as it were, "with a pull". HF is not intrusive, but very harmonious in the overall picture. They perfectly play both natural string instruments with an overtone in the overtones of wooden decks, and heavy electronic music. I haven't tried hard rock because I don't like it. Classics are generally heard as in a chamber hall. In concert recordings of classics, you can hear the rustle of clothes, the creaking of chairs at one point or another in space, which you can’t always catch through external acoustics due to additional reflections of sounds in the room. You can swing them from the computer's sound card, but the regulators will be at the limit or so - retribution for a lot of resistance. It is best to use these "ears" through a high-quality remote sound card and then through a good amplifier. You can also use the rendered sound. a card with a built-in headphone amplifier, but not powered by a USB computer or laptop! A bucket of tar in a barrel of honey is pressure on the crown of the headphone arc. As if the wheel of a bicycle had stopped on the head. I would like to come up with some kind of spring from the ceiling to the headphones to compensate for this heaviness.

Pros
  • Chic design with a clear emphasis on vintage 80s. Sturdy construction, excellent finish. Perfectly balanced detailed spatial sound.
Cons
  • Everything else is flaws. Headache in the truest sense of the word. Heavy (perhaps, therefore, sound quality and durable). Not for long listening. After half an hour, the headband begins to press on the top of the head, and no matter how you move it, the pain gradually intensifies, because there are some hard ridges under the headband. There is not enough size for a comfortable coverage of the head - the earlobes are drawn in by the lower part of the ear pads and start to hurt like hell after 40 minutes. The pressure to the ears is excessive - after an hour of listening you feel like in a torture chamber of the Inquisition. The ear pads themselves are hard and, even with strong compression of the arc, make long listening unbearable. When buying in a store, do not be too lazy to stay in these headphones for at least 30 minutes or do not buy at all.
