This radio fits all the areas I wanted in an emergency radio. There are many clock mechanisms and/or solar panels out there, but I also wanted one that would also work with regular alkaline batteries. Radios are very easy to operate on alkaline batteries and can run for many weeks and months on one set. For example, I took two AA batteries that my Wii controller had run out, plugged them into another regular AM/FM radio, and played it 9 hours a day for three weeks until I got bored of this experiment. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because this device doesn't come with a USB cable so I had to look for it. . . . which isn't difficult (and I found one for less than a dollar), but it would be a lot easier and more valuable if the manufacturer included one and charged me another 60 cents. The solar panel and USB cable charge the device very well (btw this should be done every 2-3 months to keep the internal NiMH battery charged. If you don't do this then this internal battery won't work as well as you are used to ). in the street. It just doesn't hold the charge it could if kept in good condition.) The device feels solid. The reception is good. The antenna feels solid. I love that it has a "charging" indicator that tells you when the solar panel is getting enough light to charge (as well as when you're running or charging via a USB cable). The flashlight is not very bright, but it is quite suitable for this device. This means if it were much brighter it would drain the internal battery much quicker than I would like. If you shine next to the 9 led flashlight you can get the HF for a dollar, it's not that bright. So maybe 15-20 lumens. It also has shortwave radio capability. I recently learned that ham radio calls can be received on shortwave frequencies. So, in an emergency, you can listen to these channels for even more information in addition to what your local radio station is broadcasting. The USB cable charges phones (my old T-Mobile phone works), but it doesn't work with Apple products. (iPhone, iPad) because they require more power than they supply. The internal NiMH battery is accessible without opening the entire radio. This is thoughtful as there may be a day when I want to replace it. It's just a very well thought out and well thought out gadget. It covers all the bases (which I think is nice to have) and works. And for the price, it couldn't be better. It will rival the larger Eton radios etc which cost twice as much. You can't go wrong with this device. Too bad it didn't come with a USB cable. 4.8 stars.
