For years I have told all my friends, family and co-workers to avoid the Gateway. Everyone I know who has owned a gateway computer has had problems with it. My dad worked at UPS and he told me they would ship computers to random people who never ordered them hoping they would accept cash on delivery in return and sometimes he had a dozen large computer boxes that he had to ship back to Gateway . This shady practice speaks volumes about Gateway as a company. I went to a big store to buy a computer and it came with a monitor. It was shown on a different monitor, but that particular Gateway HX2000 was part of the deal. I first told the seller that I would forgo the $80 discount and buy another monitor. Then I remembered they were bought by Acer and I've never had a broken monitor and I've had a lot of them since I became a web design company owner. So, contrary to common sense, I bought this monitor. After 3 hours of use, the backlight stops working and the screen is black. The screen does light up for a few seconds and then goes off. I knew immediately it was a hardware failure. However, the gateway tech I contacted thought it was BIOS related. I explained to him that it works fine and the BIOS has never been changed. It still refused to honor the warranty until I checked the BIOS. He couldn't even tell me what BIOS settings to check. He said some really stupid things, but I won't list them here. But I said you must be in India, which he confirmed. I contacted another technician who also spoke poor English and got him to redeem the warranty. But shipping costs me about $30 plus packing materials, gas and my time. Okay, I must be an idiot if all these people are raving about what a great monitor this is, right? Please go to the search engine and type "gateway backlight problem" and you will see hundreds of people with the same problem. Using another search bar, I found thousands of people wanting Gateway to recall their monitors because they didn't last more than a year. Problem with three capacitors in the monitor. I'm interested in electronics and used to be a certified technician and I can tell you that capacitors cost around $0.10 (10 cents). They could supply quality parts for about 30 cents more. You could save all these people a broken $150 monitor for a change. I could solve this problem myself but I want them to pay them money. This is a great monitor with a great picture. It's very reflective so it might put some people off. This monitor isn't reliable, however, so I highly recommend purchasing an extended warranty if you're willing to take the risk. I have a Sony 17 inch monitor that is 6 years old and I took it temporarily while this was being repaired and it weighed twice as much. The build is much sturdier than the Gateway and just feels like a higher quality product. I hope I'll save someone some headaches with this review.
