Verifying manufacturer's claims

As there are no other reviews here reporting actual radiation levels and I have a burgeoning interest in EMI I have decided to do a long a/k/a geek to submit a review of this product. If you are interested in purchasing a similar product, I hope this information can be helpful to some of you. Like many people, I work with computers all day. And I often have to work with my MacBook on my lap. The heat of a MacBook in my lap has always been an issue, but like most, I've gotten used to it and ignored it. Then I read that Apple says you shouldn't even use your MacBook on your lap! So I thought it was time to do something about it. But since I'm so used to working this way, I figured that instead of trying to change my habits, I might look for a heat shield for my MacBook. While searching for laptop heat shields I came across the SYB Laptop Pad. There are certainly cheaper laptop heat shields now, but this one also claims EMI protection and I thought it was worth the extra money - IF it works as advertised. The fact that it's also significantly cheaper than other EMF laptop screens I've found at Revain made it even more appealing to me. I've had this rug for about a week now and so far I'm very happy with my purchase. . Since I have an EMF meter, I decided to check the manufacturer's specs. Here's what I found: ***************************************** EMP shielding* **** ***************************** For these tests I used a Trifield 100XE. It's not the best EMF meter, but it's a very popular model and for the money you can't beat it. I took measurements on my 2016 13" MacBook Pro with an SSD. Radiation at two distances: 0 inches when using my MacBook on my lap and 4 inches when using my MacBook on a table above my knees. Me did these measurements with and without the EMI shielding pad It's also important to remember that this tablet protects against two types of EMF: EMF from MacBook power supplies and circuitry, and RF/MW EMF from MacBook Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and thanks to TriField I can test both. Testing the radiation from the bottom of my MacBook I found the following: 1) ELF at 0" (kneeling) Without the pillow I measured 10 mH ELF radiation. With the pad I got 2 mg ELF radiation measured. So based on these tests, the pad blocked about 80% of the ELF radiation from my MacBook.2) ELF at 4" (on my desk). I measured 0 mH ELF radiation with the pad. Thus the pad shielded almost the entire ELF Radiation decreased in this test.3) HF/MW at 0 inches (kneeling). up to 0.8mW/cm2. With the pad I measured somewhere between 0.01 and 0.05 mW/cm2. So the pad shielded more than 90% of the RF, depending on how you calculate it.cm2 I could not measure any detectable RF emissions with the pad. Overall, I would say that what the manufacturer claims on the list is accurate, since this pad shields 80% to 95% of the electromagnetic radiation emanating from the bottom of my laptop. ******* ******Thermal protection******* **************************** * ******* Another manufacturer claim is that the mat "sheds over 99% of the heat from your body. For this test I used an Etekcity Lasergrip 800 digital infrared thermometer. at a distance of 0". On the pad I measured 88.2 degrees. With the pad I measured 74.6 degrees, which is the ambient temperature indoors. So I would say that statements manufacturer and here are correct. ********* ***************************** Other notes** *** ***** ******** ********************* I think that heat and EMI protection features for such devices are the most important a product. But of course "There are other aspects to consider. I love the feel of this rug. At just over a pound, it feels solid without being overly heavy. And it's quite thin so it's very easy to carry around in your laptop bag. And... although I'm not a fan of the reflective upper I'm starting to like it. I saw a reviewer's comment about the edges. This wasn't an issue for me or my kids. But everyone has their own tastes and preferences. Also glued my carpet ch not on furniture, tables or other devices. I only have 10 days, but the pad itself has no "sticky" anywhere at least for now, fingers crossed :).******************* * * **** ************* Conclusion******************************** * * ** ****Overall I am very happy with this purchase. Based on my amateur testing, it appears to be doing exactly what the manufacturer claims in terms of EMI and thermal protection. And it costs about 25% less than other laptop EMF screens I've seen here at Revain. If you are not interested in EMF shielding then there are definitely cheaper laptop heat shields here at Revain and I would recommend checking them out. But if reducing EMF exposure is really important to you, then I can say this product does what it says on the tin. Hope that helps.
