They are very strong - red oak - with no significant shrinkage after 195 pounds of PEG sheet pull. Measured with a vernier caliper (brown and sharp) - 1.250. The other reviewer must have received a bad set. I was actually hoping for a little more wobble since my holes are 1 1/4 drilled - only a few thousandths left due to running out of drill bit.
