Review on ๐Ÿ”Œ SUPERNIGHT(TM) RGB Signal Amplifier for SMD 3528 5050 LED Strip Light, 12V DC 12A Repeater by Mary Nelson

Revainrating 2 out of 5

DOA - 2 out of 3 output transistors died before I used it

Thoughtful design, nice all metal body, mounting end plates, 8 countersunk screws, 4 on each end. Top quality detachable connectors on each end, well-made 4-wire pigtails and molded 4-pin connectors on each end. Other than that it was a disappointment. I bought "2 packs", huge value - just to work. I EE and decided to find out. The clever design uses 3 EL817 optotransistors to sample incoming RGB PWM signals from another (lower power) LED driver block while providing 5000V isolation between the input and output circuits. The outputs of these isolators drive three ON Semiconductor NTD40N03R power MOSFETs, which drive the outputs. Well 2 of the 3 output MOSFETs were no good. Their gates were "busted," meaning static electricity permanently damaged the devices. This can happen in manufacturing if proper anti-static equipment and procedures are not used, either when handling transistors before soldering them to the board or during soldering. This is not the type of damage that usually occurs during use, even from a clumsy buyer. However, they are so beautiful, with such a high quality PCB design, that I will be keeping and repairing them, replacing the damaged output transistors with some IRF3205 I. I accidentally left them lying around. i love soldering I love being able to use my old oscilloscope. I will update this review if I find other issues. Now only the nice chassis boxes and connectors are worth what I paid for them.

Pros
  • Feels good
Cons
  • Not the best
