Bought for my teenage daughter who wants more independence and myself who wants to protect her. You really can't accidentally pull on it and set off an alarm. It takes a good, intentional pull, but once you do, you can hear it! We wanted her to have something we could hear if she was anywhere near us (you can!) and something unobtrusive that you don't have to carry around. Also felt it would deter potential villains. Of course, it's VERY awkward to be around when he explodes! Gave one to my mom too in case she falls indoors or outside, say in the parking lot.
