I have to admit I bought this monitor stand hoping to get the best out of it. I am in an unusual situation and need a monitor stand that will allow me to work in a semi-recumbent position on my bed, that will allow me to tilt my keyboard table without being too high, and that will keep my laptop safely within reach holds. A sudden laptop failure forced me to use an older, fairly heavy 17" laptop (about 8 lbs) while my favorite 15" light laptop (3 lbs) was being repaired. Although a large laptop can fit on a laptop arm, it's not very stable or secure. And to top it all off, the HDMI cable connection is blocked by the adjustable clip that holds the laptop. There's no way around it. Also, the adjustable, spring-loaded clip doesn't hold it securely, and if it slips out, the opposite side will suddenly collapse and could knock your laptop to the ground. The mount and clip work great with a small and light laptop. So yes, it fits a 17-inch laptop, but no, that's probably not a good idea. I would give this monitor stand 5 stars if it didn't claim to be able to hold a 17 inch laptop. It's not an afterthought if you buy this stand expecting your massive 17 inch monitor to be usable. Another thing to note is that your desktop or desk must be perfectly level, otherwise the levers will not be able to swing to the right or stay in the correct position. This is not a disadvantage. It's just something you need to know. My laptop stand (actually it's a hospital table) has two independently tilting tables, so with a bit of engineering I can have a level one and a tilted one. Still, it wasn't an easy task. The manufacturer specifically states in their description that the stand MUST be placed on a flat surface and trust them. Is that so. I don't blame them because that's not a mistake, it's just a fact. I'm just saying. READ what they tell you. It's a really solid device, very versatile and pleasant to use. It works well for what it is intended for. It's just that I have circumstances that force me to improvise, and that's the best platform for improvisation.
