A basic introduction to LED lighting and the Philips Hue system

Home lighting, smart home and other devices, and after some research I decided to try the Philips Hue system. I also have some basic non-smart LED bulbs in my house. So far I'm very happy with the Hue system, although it will take some time before I fully understand all the ways it can be modified and used. I use mine with an Apple HomeKit system and the HomeKit integration was automatic and hassle-free. There are big price differences in each bulb depending on what they can do, from simple LED bulbs that don't offer any integration with the Hue system (remote control and programming) to bulbs that are part of the Hue system and have features including full color management (the most expensive). The Philips Hue system requires the use of a connected Hue hub. to your home Wi-Fi system to connect and control specific Hue lights and accessories, and starter kits are available to get a hub along with two or four lights. It initially took some time to understand the differences between the different Philips Hue bulbs, so here's a quick introduction: the main types of Philips bulbs (both HUE bulbs and bulbs in other colors). ALL ARE 60W Equivalent Dimmable E26 Type (Standard Bulb): - 1st (NOT tinted) 800 lumens warm 2700K - 2nd (NOT tinted) 800 lumens daylight 5000K - 3rd tinted 840 lumens warm 2700K - 4 tint 800 Lumens white atmosphere 2200 -6500K - 5th shade 800 lumens white and color atmosphere 2000-6500K plus "16 million" colors All the above lamps consume about 9-10 watts at maximum brightness. There is a huge price difference between the 5 listed types. above, from about $2-3 per bulb (1 and 2 above), to $10 per bulb (3 above), 20 per bulb (4 above), and finally $40 per bulb for all the bells and whistles (5 above). I quickly realized that if I didn't need to change the "warmth" of the light in a particular room or area, all I needed was a regular LED bulb, warm or daylight, and it didn't have to be a Hue bulb, when I didn't need it. Control lightbulbs via the app. The brightness can be controlled at any time with an LED compatible wall dimmer or any other smart home dimmer that can be integrated into a smart home system. As well as dimming, the White Ambiance Hue bulb works great. Finally, if I want to add special effects, different colors and anything else you can think of in the lighting, then white and colored ambient light bulbs offer that possibility. Starter Kits I started with this basic kit which contains four White Ambiance bulbs plus a hub: Hue Starter Kit 4 x 800 lumens White Ambiance 2200-6500K plus a hub Other starter kits come with two or four basic white ones Hue bulbs or two available white and colored bulbs for atmosphere. Lightstrips I installed Hue lightstrips under the countertop in our kitchen and they are amazing. I'm also planning to install them under the edges of the bed in our bedroom to provide nighttime and ambient lighting. Hue LightStrip 1600 lumens white and 2000-6500K color gamut plus "16 million" colors The light strips proved to be one of the most enjoyable parts of the system and are very easy to install. App controlled and there is great flexibility in programming the light. They can be organized by room or otherwise, and controlled in groups or individually. Hue lights are not designed to be used with a wall dimmer unless the dimmer is specifically designed for use with a Hue system. Once the light has been turned off with the wall switch, it cannot be turned back on with the Hue controls. The Hue Dimmer/Remote is a handy accessory if you want to control your lights without an app: Hue Smart Dimmer Hue Smart Dimmer Plus 1800 Lumens White Atmosphere 220-6500K I have a dimmer and I use it to control the lights in our kitchen. A "tip switch" and a motion sensor are also available. I have not tried any of these products yet. There's a lot more to say about this Hue system, but I just want to give a quick overview of the types of lighting available.

Pros
  • With this free installation kit, all you have to do is screw a white Hue LED bulb into a standard bracket and turn on the light
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
