An investment but our son loves it! He's 21 months old and we've kept the triangles and largest rectangles for now (still gives him plenty!). It has already found many applications. In less than 2 weeks, they transformed into a tower, a staircase, a driveway for cars, a footstool in his chair, a step to stand on his toy bench with tools, a tunnel for cars to drive through and a bin for throwing toys in (flat on the floor with the hole facing up). When we redesigned our deck, he carried around two flat pieces and his hammer all day. The other reviews are correct - it's just the right weight; light enough to be carried and strong enough to meet the demands. No sharp edges, well made and durable. Are there surface scratches on some items that may have been there when we received them? Although it is not obvious to me and does not bother.
