All my pliers stay open when not in use. So if you are using pliers, place them on the shackle and squeeze to close the shackle on the pendant. However, it has no spring to open them. You have to open the pliers with an extra finger (which I don't have!) while holding the pendant with the other hand, then squeeze. I don't have any other pliers. I don't know if it was a bad couple or if they are all like that. But these are the worst pliers and I have many pliers to compare them to. Get rid of them and find another brand that works easier than this one. I very much regret having bought them.
