I always put the Christmas tree in a mixture of corn syrup and water. I inevitably spill a bit and this wonderful decorative finish already saved the day by keeping it from getting onto the carpet. It's also much easier to pick up needles that fall out of the vinyl than if they get stuck in the carpet fibers. So easy to clean. I put a cheap 48" Walmart Rock (which I already had) on the stand. For the holidays, it should be sold as a Christmas tree skirt, not a tablecloth.
