Like most children, my child loves to make noise. We yelled at each other through his silicone chewing straw and the thin PVC tubing left over from the scratching post. Thought he'd like something like that and at the age of 10-11 months it only took him a day or two to figure out how to whistle a flute. The wood is lightly polished but as far as I can tell it doesn't appear to be detrimental. I haven't noticed this yet, but I'll probably remove them when I notice he's actually chewing on wood. Otherwise he likes to walk around with a flute, chatting and blowing into it from time to time. My wife expressed concern about the possibility of her mouth falling with it, which is a good sign. So it's a good idea not to make this one of those set and forget toys. There are no obvious choking hazards that I have investigated unless your child has rodents strong enough to bite hard worked wood.
