my daughter is 5 years old, very sturdy. The xs is not skin tight and will probably last a full year. If your 5-year-old has a big butt or hates being tight, xs might look like compression leggings (consider going up a size). If your daughter is used to elastic waist pants that fall down or need to be folded like a size XS, this might fit!
