TL/DR: If you don't believe me, find a way to connect a 9V battery where you try the products. 2 stars ONLY because the product works as intended and it's my fault for not paying close attention to the strip assembly. There is no rubber/plastic coating on the band like some other products that cost $3-5 more. From an electrical safety perspective, due to the open nature, I cannot recommend using them near water or where children can reach them. Contacts. Yes, it's only 12v, but the power supply can deliver up to 2 amps, which is the dangerous part if you don't know. NEVER rely on a surge protector, circuit breaker, GFI or fuse for protection from electricity, these devices will put out fires but will not save lives. (Covering the LEDs makes the strip unusable) seals it up well and makes the strip a little bit safer in a more reliable scope, but it's still not as good as having the entire strip covered and sealed. Both ends. For those who think I've overdone it, this strip will NOT be allowed on a Navy ship due to the exposed contacts on the strip. I'm really disappointed that it was so easy to find, I think it should be hidden in the far corner with hobbyist/enthusiast stuff, at least then it's not always accessible to someone whose knowledge of electrical safety is to " not to do that knife in the socket.
