Much better than I expected. It really does spark. The punch handle is a big bonus. It's big enough to really grab it and hit the bar. The striker is in the shape of a "U", it hits the beat and leaves no burrs. Slowly hit the bar down with the "U" and he'll shoot out a spark like crazy. To be honest I don't see any difference in this ferro rod compared to others other than a cheaper price, less than $9 for me and a better than average striker. Most don't have an included striker at all.
