Regular sized balls which is a plus. Some marble walkways need a special small size. The pieces are easy to put together and you get enough to really make some fun. It's a little older than my two-year-old, but she can put pieces together and build towers, even if she can't follow instructions or find a working marble walkway. When everyone is together, she loves to put marbles in and watch them go through the maze. The pieces fit together well enough that she doesn't break them every time she places the marbles. someday there won't be enough room below for them all. If you put more than a few marbles in, it can get noisy too, but I guess that's part of the fun.
