The house doesn't work without it! My wife calls it her "secret weapon" in our war on child terror. This toy serves as a rattle, hand-eye coordination aid, chew toy, versatile hook and parenting aid. Our baby loves to suck on it while playing, so it's BPA-free and phthalate-compatible according to the sassybaby website. If she starts fidgeting or crying while we're away, we'll just rock her in front of us and her soft clicking and bouncing colors are always instantly reassuring. It's amazing how fascinated she is with this toy! It also has many finishes that are easy to grip (with one or two hands) and a variety of textures (some rings are rough, some are smooth, some are ribbed). You can also chain the rings together as an alternative form of toy or utility hook (be careful not to choke yourself). It's also compact enough to fit in your pocket or stroller cup holder. To keep your child busy while eating, we attach them hanging over the child by the handle of the carrier/stroller with a loop tie such as the Ulubulu Universal Pacifier Clip, Oliver Owl or the reusable self-locking Velcro cable ties with Velcro, length 0.5" x 8" Black, Pack of 100 Zip Ties (91140) . If the child is holding a toy instead, a pacifier strap can also be attached to the bib to prevent the toy from falling to the ground. Baby and wife love this toy so much I bought two more to keep one at home, one in the car and one in a diaper bag. Of course, your special baby may have different tastes, but no fancy projector, sound machine, smartphone app, etc. can save your sanity and the embarrassment of a publicly crying baby as quickly and easily as this $4 toy. Alternatives: The Manhattan Toy Winkel is another great toy (baby's second favorite toy to grab, look at, and suckle) and has a soft built-in rattle, but it's bulky and not that useful for soothing a crying baby. So that the child does not get bored with the ring toy, we let them play with angles at home instead. Real rattles like the Bright Starts rattle and the Shake Barbell rattle are louder but cannot hold my baby's attention for more than a second and are very limited in range. This might be fine for an older child, but for now it just sits at home unused. Various vendors have similar toys, some even have more rings, but no one seems to have any information on BPA and phthalates. Babies love to put everything in their mouths, so we try to only look for products that are free of toxins.
