I have learned over the years to find the sweet spot, slip a piece of the red rubber .

I use this material to level toilets on uneven floors. I have learned over the years to find the sweet spot, slip a piece of the red rubber under the porcelain - may need to be folded over in some cases for a big gap - and then cut the excess off with my razor knife right against the porcelain. If you do it right, a ring of white caulk around the toilet will cover both the rubber and the gap.
