There are many similar fakes on the market. Here's what I like and don't like about this model compared to others. Let's start with what I don't like: - Much larger diameter than most other comparable products and for a specific reason I can't figure out. - Doesn't seem particularly durable. Good as an emergency kit along with other gear, but as the only flashlight on a wilderness expedition I wouldn't want to rely on it. - As other reviewers have noted, it needs better travel protection. The bottom battery compartment popped out on one of my two test devices, and I heard plastic shards rattling around on the other. This reassured me that these hoses are more suited to an emergency kit and likely won't stand up to abuse on the trails. Now for what I really like, and obviously like it enough for a high overall score: + Bright light with a good reflector at the end of the flashlight - just enough to send the focused beam farther than I expected. In lantern mode, one unit illuminates a very large space, enough for safe movement during a power outage. The strap can be rotated to put it on the side or end, in the first case if you carry it as a flashlight and in the second case to hang it. Why isn't every dual purpose flashlight designed like this?+ Easy to use.+ Comes with batteries ready to use or kept in an emergency kit (remove the batteries if you plan to store them for a long period of time). + This flashlight/lantern costs around $9 when purchased as a pair and is very good value, especially considering that batteries are included. For only $18, you get two universal lights for the Hurricane/Blizzard Kit. Conclusion: 5 stars for design/versatility; 3 stars for durability; 5 stars for value; I will reduce everything to 4 stars.
