It used to be a good device

UPDATED REVIEW: The following review is from the first version of SmartDry. I gave him five stars. He worked a little over a year, after which he stopped working; I replaced it with the GEN 2 version. Since then, the phone app only works occasionally and the Alexa app doesn't work at all (I uninstalled/reinstalled both, followed all the instructions, etc.). Without reliable notifications, this device is pointless and as such mine is pretty much useless at the moment. _____________________________________________________________________ I wasn't expecting much from this thing. My old dryer works fine but I was tempted to replace it only to get the one who sent me the notifications I need at the facility I currently live in. I initially chose the SmartDry sensor as a cheaper alternative. And it completely solved my problem. Setup isn't too difficult, just follow the instructions in the downloadable SmartDry app. Please note that the dryer has a transmitter in addition to the appliance, which must remain plugged into a wall socket near the dryer; It's not big, but sticks out a couple of inches. I was wondering if the sensor held by the magnet would stay in the rotating drum, but I had no problem with that. The application is simple but sufficient; You can be notified when the laundry dries, when the dryer stops, after a desired time, or a combination of these. Not only does SmartDry work reliably, it turns out SmartDry knows when my clothes are drying a lot better than mine. dryer does. My dryer settings are clumsy; Clothes usually come out either damp or baked, and since I want them dry, I choose baked. When SmartDry tells me they're dry, they are (you can adjust this in the Settings app if needed), and it's well before the dryer shuts itself off. It saves me a lot of time, not to mention energy and money. Someone has complained that the Alexa notification is just a beep that makes you ask what the notification is. This is an Alexa issue - at least that's how Alexa notifications work for now. As far as I know, Revain hasn't released an API yet that would allow developers to send custom notifications directly to an Echo device. Long term reliability is always an issue with this type of device and I haven't used it long enough to know about it. These reviews have raised some questions about build quality, but it seems well fit for purpose. If I have any issues I will come back and edit this review. Until then, this little gem deserves five stars.
