I replaced the internal optical drive on my 15" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8.2 Early 2011) with a cheaper hard drive tray and had nothing but problems. Formatting the drive took 20 minutes. I kept trying to copy files to it and every time I tried I got terrible performance (10kb/s), I/O errors in Console.app and the kernel completely shut down the disk , because he did not answer . I just tried doing the same thing with this OWC data doubler and I've got 100Mbps throughput right away and absolutely no I/O errors. OWC Data Doubler is a high quality product and I highly recommend it. The OWC Data Doubler costs about $35, which is $25 more than the cheaper hard drive tray, but it's worth it. The OWC Data Doubler comes with all the screwdrivers (4 of them - 2 Torx, Phillips and a flathead!) and a small plastic pry you need to replace the optical drive with a second hard drive. The cheaper hard disk slot only comes with a tiny Phillips screwdriver. The OWC Data Doubler is made from high quality metal and has plenty of airflow to keep your second hard drive cool while the cheaper hard drive tray is aluminum and very cheap looking. I am very satisfied with OWC Data Doubler. and highly recommended. I'm usually a cheapskate and will buy cheaper products if they work well, but in this case I'll never hesitate again and immediately buy a slightly more expensive but infinitely better OWC Data Doubler.
