I don't know how, but the puzzle inserts stuck to the board. We have no idea how this happened, we can only assume that the puzzle pieces got wet/wet (all evenly) and were put back on the puzzle board. We recently used it on my sister in law who had a stroke and it was like all the pieces were on the board with SUPER GLUE. I'm a big guy and I could only solve one puzzle piece from the board. The main layer of cardboard came off and stuck to the puzzle piece. We don't think it got wet but since we didn't get the other 11 off we threw it away. I asked everyone if it was a prank, but it wasn't. Needless to say - never get this item wet as the paint on the puzzle shapes will turn into super glue. (This happened the day after the return window closed.)
