Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works well - Simple mod - Found 1 Quirk

I bought a set of 7 red and yellow to replace 5 each in our 2009 class C that we recently bought. I've made a lot of more complex modifications, so the thought of changing them for the install wasn't a problem. One of the pics I uploaded shows the mod in progress. #1 is the unit that was received with the lens cap removed (LEDs are orange btw). #2 with a 1/4" hole drilled just below and between the two PCB mounting pin holes. #3 is a front view of how I pushed/pulled the wires into the block and got them out through the new hole under the circuit board. No. 4 is the back after turning over both wires. #5 is a finished product, ready for installation. Since they aren't exactly the same shape I removed the old blocks and cleaned and polished the fiberglass to get rid of the stains etc in the ring around the base. Since a couple of screws in the old blocks broke when trying to remove them, I had to relocate them since the distance between the screw holes is the same. I drilled 1/8" holes for the new screws (they need some reaming, cheap screws break if you have aluminum behind fiberglass like I have) and installed the new lightbulbs. As with many LED products, it is polarity. sensitive so I made built in crimp connectors on both wires coming out of the lights and used one of these as a tester to determine the polarity of the two black wires from the RV in each of the 5 holes. I turned on the RV's headlights and while testing each set of 5, I bent the positive side to the left and the negative side to the right, then began installing each bulb. I applied silicone to the back of the unit around the screw holes and the new cable hole and to the mounting area around the 1" diameter hole that was used in the old unit's gaskets. When I was ready to install the last piece of equipment, Murphy came along. on stage, see second pictureโ€ฆ. I noticed that all the lights only illuminated 4 of the 10 LEDs, 2 on each side?! Definitely one of those WTF moments. Well I put the new block in and now all 5 behave the same. Remember I tested the blocks with a 12v battery on my desktop so they were ok before installing. After examining the problem in my 70+ year old brain, I thought about using the running lights and other elements for a few days (off and on), maybe the truck's battery was dead. Of course the truck didn't start! So add a "Low Battery" check to the quirks/features of these flashlights. Time will tell how well they stand up to sunlight, rain and mud. At some point in the future I will update this review with any issues I come across, at least I have two spares for either end of the camper.
