Highly recommended depending on how you intend to use it. Requires 3 AA batteries that charge from below. The base gives more light than the "shade" part of the lamp in my opinion, but I use both at the same time. I wanted the top of my computer desk to be usable at night with enough light to see the keyboard on the desk stand and I didn't want anything plugged into an outlet so that in the event of a power outage I could easily take the lamp with me other room. Having less cable to plug into the port is a big plus for me. There is an on-off automatic switch. I'm really thinking about getting a second one, I love it so much. Really no assembly other than putting in batteries. I have night light I don't use it for that, so motion detection doesn't matter to me. When I put it on the table and put my elbow next to it with my arm raised, it doesn't reach my wrist and I'm small (5'1"). It's made in China and very light with batteries.
