These lamps are a really fun addition to my bedroom. Because they're battery operated, there's nothing to plug into the wall and no messy cords hanging down. You can hang them with all the components out of reach as they come with a handy little remote control. You need 3 AA batteries. On the back of the battery pack is an explanation of the numbers on the remote control and what settings you get by pressing each one. Alternatively, if you lose the remote, you can press the power button on the battery x number of times to get the same results. They're pretty self-explanatory, but that's the limit of the recommendations you'll get with them. There is a timer function but I have no idea how long it lasts and if it can be set to a different time. All I know is that I pushed the button before I went to bed and when I woke up they were off. And they turned on at the same time every night until I hit the power button again. In addition to the fixed setting, you can choose from 7 different flashing/strobe/flickering effects. I've also found that there are four different settings to brighten or dim them. The stars are really coming out of the lightbulbs. They just switch on or off. Therefore, be careful when moving them to one place or another so as not to lose them in the process. If they had come up with a little better explanation of timer settings/instructions I would have given five stars. But I really like them in my space.
