The mount works by first expanding it by pressing the two latches on the sides. Then by pressing the phone down, the middle button on the holder is pressed and the 4 corners slide in and grab it. Here's the problem though: I have a Moto Z3 Play, which is a phone with a camera that protrudes a bit on the back. Like many iPhone and Samsung devices. So the back of the phone is not flat. There is a gap between the phone and the button that prevents him from pressing it down. I solved this problem by highlighting the button by sticking the included non-scratch adhesive pad over the button. It's a hack, but it works. Another solution could be to use a phone case that smooths the back. That design flaw aside, the product is worth the money. Feels solid and protects the phone well. You can entrust even your most expensive phones to the mount.
