It appears to be a holdover from vTech toys from the 1990s.
Inexpensive design. Bad sound quality. Very gluttonous. The microphone side has already failed and is no longer picking up sound. My wife and I didn't like the quality right away, but initially it worked. It turns out that the initial instinct was correct. Once we realized that our baby was crying but the monitor didn't pick it up. At least we heard his screams the old-fashioned way. Graco should find a new company to manufacture its monitors.
