In my opinion it has that totally imperfect look that a lot of crafts have. Not only do I use it as a decorative element, it supports my head in a hanging bed. I experienced absolutely no shedding. I've even tried to pluck the threads from the pom poms to no avail, although if you pull hard enough and keep doing it you'll get some of the fluff from the original pom pom thread trimming. The back of the pillow is like canvas and experience has taught me that such fabrics sometimes puff up over time, especially if you use them a lot like I do.
