Updated Feeding Review

Update again (April 2020): Sprout has clearly fixed the issues with rice and he is no longer part of their puffs. Thanks for being so responsible, Sprout! I haven't tried the new recipe yet, so I'm changing my rating from 1 star to 3 stars based on the recipe alone. I'm updating my review after two members of the Sprout team called me to address my concerns. I used their contact page on the Sprout website to send them a detailed review which I posted on Revain. Within two days, the customer service representative and the vice president of quality assurance called. They offer a new Power Puffs formula that is rice-free (the main ingredients are quinoa and sorghum). They also assured me that they test each rice plant to ensure it meets their own internal standards of 10 ppb (or less) for lead, arsenic, and cadmium. Of course, I cannot reconcile this information about their quality control standards with the report's findings. So, to be on the safe side, I will avoid Sprout Rice Puffs and other brands. But I find them genuine and knowledgeable about their goal of making healthy snacks for kids. Previous Review: I bought these because quinoa was listed before rice on the ingredient list, and knowing that rice is often high in arsenic, I was hoping that these puffs would be a healthier alternative to puffs made only with rice . Boy was I wrong. In a report by Healthy Babies Bright Futures (healthbabyfood.org), these puffs (see page 26 of the report) were tested with tons of other baby foods. Arsenic was 107 parts per billion (billion), inorganic arsenic was 47 parts per billion (which is totally unforgivable since it's much more easily absorbed by the body), lead was 39.3 parts per billion (also totally unforgivable, especially since it was a lot higher than other puffs). ) and cadmium 41.5 ppb. My poor boy has been eating a handful of these brownies every day for the last 3 months and I was horrified to learn he had been exposed to a combination of neurotoxins and carcinogenic heavy metals that can cause permanent brain damage. The Food and Drug Administration does nothing to regulate baby food and shames Sprout for greenwashing its products without imposing its own high standards for safe baby food.
