We liked the first one and bought a second tablet I tested 4 different cases before settling on this one This is a two piece design with a front frame that fits into the foam on the back.You can't use the back foam without a front frame.The only thing I complain about is the screen protector that is glued to the front of the frame. Unfortunately, this disrupts the slick feel of the screen, so I'd recommend removing it if it bothers you, as it did for us. Our device already came with a tempered glass screen protector, which we found unreliable and unnecessary. Part of the screen is glued into the bezel that comes with the iPad. For our blue case, we removed the screen film from the inside of the bezel and cleaned up any excess adhesive that we could. Then we put the iPad back in the case and it works great. We all prefer it to the one that still has the protective plastic film on. The bonus pen holder on the back is very secure yet affordable. We haven't installed a shoulder strap yet, but it's a good option that led us to this model.
