I bought this item for my living room expecting a hard bookshelf that was supposed to be light. It's REALLY easy! I could assemble it myself and it's modular and you can put it into a number of different shapes depending on your needs. In my case I use it next to my living room chair. I needed an easy to move shelf that isn't heavy to get my Christmas decorations, tree and gifts out of the way and when it's time to celebrate it can be pushed aside completely making it light weight and fairly sturdy. It has a metal frame and very, very thick plastic walls, sides and bottom. Imagine a very, very thick sheet metal tread. It diffuses the light from small lamps that I put inside and creates a nice glowing atmosphere in my living room. I have wooden boxes full of my acrylic paints. (Shelves hold 11 pounds) The bottom shelf has my heavy Bible, notes and binders and it holds it very tight. Storing heavier items (less than 11 pounds) on the bottom shelf has made me more confident. After assembling the shelf, I was very surprised at the strength of the I shelf that I assembled on the stairs. It doesn't rock like the other shelf I returned to Walmart. I am very happy with the quality and the ease of assembly. metal bars available. Make sure you see that while there are four slots that are very obvious for top, bottom, left and right, there is also a flat ledge that the shelves slide into to make them top and bottom. The pages are easy to understand. All I had to do was put the cap on and press into a flat lip, which I didn't notice at first. I wouldn't sit on this shelf and place heavy sharp hot objects on it, but I use a coaster for my 20 ounce coffee mugs. I have one shelf fully loaded at the recommended 11 pounds per shelf with no sagging and I am very happy with my purchase. I will be buying another one for my kitchen to store extra pantry items and pot lids for a month. It was a great purchase and I am very happy to have all my art supplies on such a beautiful shelf.
