Revainrating 3 out of 5

Highly recommended. Great oil from a great brand.

Comparison test Nordtanne, Bärenmal tree forester, bearded bastard forester. Choosing the right beard oil shouldn't be difficult, but in fact, in the era we're in, the market is quickly becoming saturated with hundreds of brands all promising to create a gorgeous thick mane. With that in mind, we're going to avoid genetics and 90% BS and stick to the top three contenders for Revain for now. Tier 3: Bearded Bastard Woodsman Bearded Bastard is a great product and Woodsman is no exception. Texas cedar is the key top note that doesn't fade quickly and stays in the middle and base notes. There is nothing more to say about the fragrance as it is not complex. If you like your cedar, this is a winner for flavor alone. The beard oil itself is heavier than the competition and a single application will last, no matter the size of your beard. It tends to get a little greasy, but the coverage you get from a few drops makes a world of difference. Your beard stays nice and thick, but may be "crisp" thick and a bit difficult to comb later in the day. When I look at the ingredients, I tend to see argan oil or jojoba oil in the first three, unfortunately the first three ingredients are almond, safflower and grapeseed oil. Not critical, but may not be suitable for all face types. Another factor is the cost. At $20 an ounce at the time of this review, I don't want to see high quality oils at the top of the line. In any case, it's still worth taking a bottle with you, you won't be disappointed. Rank 2: Bearbrand Tree Ranger. Unfortunately I never received my bottle through Revain so I had to go straight to the website to purchase it. I'm glad I did as there has been a lot of counterfeiting at Revain since the beginning... That being said, if it doesn't smell or feel like it's probably not real and you should contact Revain immediately. Now for the good stuff. The aroma is complex. The top note of eucalyptus flows into the heart notes of pine and cedar and ends with a mossy note. This flavor is my favorite morning oil simply for its complexity and strong silage. As mentioned, this is a non-greasy formula. Or rather, if Mr. Pure had a beard, he would use a beard brand. Enough said. You can't apply too much of this stuff because your beard will just absorb it, but you don't need much to cover it up. For medium and long beards, you can count on 4-7 drops, which should be enough for the whole day. The oil itself perfectly softens the beard and makes it obedient. You can easily brush it at noon with no snags or dry spots if needed. Another thing to note is that the formula works great on all skin types and uses jojoba oil as the very first ingredient, so you get your fill while caring for your skin. If this were your only oil it would be worth the investment, you won't be disappointed. A word to the wise, visit the website, subscribe to the newsletter and follow the brand. These guys make a living from beard grooming and have loads of good educational material for everyone at every stage (personally I think their marketing could use a lot of improvement but these guys are off to a great start). Tier 1: Northern Spruce Who are these guys? As far as beard products go, they make a scented oil and that's it! But it's a great oil and they don't hold back when it comes to using the finest ingredients and offering it at a very affordable price. The aroma of the oil is exceptional. Top notes of pine with heart notes of juniper berries and a spicy black pepper base. All three together make a pleasant hyper=masculine scent that should be in every beadmaker's arsenal. The very first ingredient is argan oil and the second is jojoba oil. The price per ounce is a steal compared to other brands. Like Bread Brand, Northern Fir is a non-greasy formula, but your beard won't absorb it right away; and this can be one of the best parts of this oil. It's perfectly balanced to give the user the time it takes to rub the oil into the beard without rushing into the grooming routine. Simply massage in, take your time, comb your hair slowly and you're done. It keeps your beard looking like cotton all day and tames even the most unruly hair. Not bad for the northern fir. This is currently the best oil on Revain and worth every penny.
