Table top mounts from Rok Hardware are the best way to mount a table top. Simply make a cut on the inside of the table skirt between 3/8" and 1/2" from the top and about 3/8" deep. Place fasteners about every 12 inches around the top, or at least one on each side. Fasteners take into account the seasonal movement of wood. Rok fasteners are unpainted but have a light oil coating likely from the manufacturing process and will rust if used on outdoor furniture. I use fasteners as is, but a coat of spray paint will stop rust if that's a problem.
