I often visit the Dominican Republic. I've never been robbed. I received this as a precaution. I never get up or seek attention. That's a great airbag. I like this travel bag very much. I put it in belt after belt. It's hard to see when hidden behind the belt. This frees up your pockets for unwanted items that you might not mind if you stole them. As you can see from one of my photos there is plenty of room for your passport laid on its side, some cash and 2 credit cards or ID. There is still room for other items. However, I wouldn't stuff it unless you have extra room in your pants or shorts.
