Not as good as JVC HAFX1X Xtreme-Xplosives

I bought a pair of JVC HAFX1X headphones in 2012 and they have served me well for the past 8 years. I've mainly used them as cheap headphones to take around the world. They were lightweight, extremely portable, and came with a carrying case. The bass quality was phenomenal and they really felt like a pair of quality headphones at an extremely affordable price. They were also stylish and reliable. They've worn so much over the years I thought they were resilient. The only downside was that they didn't have a volume control or microphone, which may not be a disadvantage for some if you're looking for something cheap and minimalist. Nevertheless, JVC has earned a loyal customer. Unfortunately, after removing the earwax buildup, the acoustic output collapsed, so I decided to buy a new pair. Enter HAFX103R. It's 6 years newer so it must be better right? Not correct. I risked them with some expectations and was a bit disappointed. The price is about the same but the bass has been twisted as it should be. The difference is day and night when you swap them out. In addition, the sound quality is also a bit lower, but this is not so noticeable. It should be noted that the size has decreased by about 40-50%, which probably explains the bass drop. I'm a bit of a tall guy (6ft 4in) so my ears are a bit bigger. These new earbuds fit my ears almost completely, unlike the previous ones which protruded a bit and felt just right. The only plus is that they come with a microphone for use on your phones, which I haven't tested yet. Oh and I wouldn't use them for working out at the gym as they tend to fall out. I have a nice set of on-ear Bluetooth headphones for the gym. My honest recommendation? Skip them and get the JVC HAFX1X if you just want to listen to music on long journeys. Even in 2020 they are still good quality at a low price.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and bulky
