When the top is fully centered it prevents spills, but the sides are transparent so not everything is protected. The top of our mattress is clean, the sides are slow to absorb dirt and dust. It doesn't wrinkle or irritate while you sleep, so there's a bonus. But for the price it works as I expected. If you want Fort Knox you will have to pay a lot more. I don't see how it's supposed to protect against bed bugs, mites etc when placed on top. I would recommend it anyway, it's a lot better than saying the big store version of the same ones I've tried in the past is twice the price.
