Review on Docking Station GPD Handheld GamePlayer by Kelly Sadiq

A must for GPD Win 3 owners, but at a high price

In March I missed my Win 3 with the included dock on the back. In the end I settled on a cheap USB-C hub, which got the job done but without all the conveniences a docking station could offer (e.g. easy plugging and Win 3 for proper ventilation). So I decided to buy this dock, even though it was a little... more expensive than I expected. For $83, you really do get a cheap USB-C hub in a nicely sculpted piece of plastic. If you're a Switch owner, you already know the pain, but at least the $90 Switch dock comes with a power adapter. This is not the case. So if you're looking to buy this, make sure you're prepared to use your existing Win 3 power adapter for it, or get a 65W USB-C adapter with it. Price aside...everything works. Well, I have a small wireless keyboard and mouse combo that's plugged into a docking station and Win 3 can connect to them at any time with no problem. Win 3 can also switch displays from its own screen to the TV if you've configured Windows to only show it on the second screen when connected. The only real issue I had was when trying to power the dock through the HDMI selector I have. This prevented the dock from detecting the TV, so the display could not be adjusted to fit the TV, resulting in the outer edges being off-screen. Connecting to the TV itself fixed the issue, although I have no idea if this will be the case with other HDMI selectors. As someone who isn't very tech savvy, I appreciate the ease of use with this one. If you have Win 3 but didn't get a docking station kit, this is a solid buy. Do note, however, that it's pricey for what it offers, and the $20 USB-C hub can do a lot of what it does, although you'll have to quickly find a way to make it work during the day playing can be ventilated. If you're thinking about Win 3... Unless you're sure you'll never connect it to a TV, I recommend just getting a docking station kit.
