I love Gear VR - if you've dabbled with Google Cardboard but don't have the system or conviction to jump into desktop VR, Gear VR is a great way to get started with current-gen VR. When I first entered the VR arena I was fortunate to be able to try all types of VR and without a doubt I would recommend anyone who wants to go beyond Google Cardboard and experience what a dedicated VR producer can offer β get the VR GEAR! In fact, it's so obvious at the top of the pyramid when looking at low to mid-range VR that this review is mostly about the Innovator and Consumer editions! Equipment VR. I bought the Gear VR Innovator myself and got a consumer version as a gift. I'm not going to give the most comprehensive review (in this case, I recommend YouTube), but I'll try to explain the KEY differences between the two so you understand what you're getting into. I vote 5/5 for this edition of Innovator for a number of reasons, but again, I personally found that I was missing information comparing Consumer vs. Innovator during my initial research. KEY differences: 1) Consumer provides support for glasses, Innovator is not suitable for glasses (however, there may be light leakage in the consumer due to glasses) 2) Innovator has a fan and a stronger belt system. (The fan does lose charging power, but both target wireless and there are better wired solutions like the Rift) 3) The pass-through camera WORKS with no modifications to the Innovator. The protective film of the phone must be removed at the consumer. 4) (my opinion) Innovator feels more comfortable over a longer period of time. Now I think #4 is the most important part of the consideration - watching an entire movie with something like that on your head must be a little awkward compared to how the media is normally viewed. #2 is important depending on your usage - I personally don't like being plugged in while using the device and would certainly prefer charging to using. However, for power users who want to stay online for 6-8 hours, the consumer variant should be considered. The 5/5 rating takes into account the price that comes with a VR system if you already own an S6 - the cardboard and plastic options Oculus just pales in comparison to this device and it's a great way to get into Jump into VR without breaking the bank. I'm biased, of course, but I think Innovator > Consumer!
