Review on SUUNTO 5: A Sleek and Portable GPS Sports Watch Offering 24/7 Activity Tracking and Wrist-Based Heart Rate by Daniel Truett

Revainrating 2 out of 5

TOO DIM: Bad design from a great company.

I am a long time Suunto fan and wear the Ambit 2 every day. Was excited to upgrade to this new design. Pros: light weight, good price for functionality, less bulky than many similar models. Cons: TOO BLACK to read, illegible. I suspect it was a choice for longer battery life, but what a disaster. A clock you can't read is useless. Before you ask, there is no brightness selection, just a "Backlight - Toggle or Automatic" selection. I called Suunto support (great service, they answered Sunday morning!). The support person took a watch to check this as it is a new design. A few minutes later they told me: "You are right. It's really boring and you should bring it back. I sent it back and am going to buy a Suunto 9 (double the price ugh) hoping it's the best option. Would have preferred 5. I think they will release a software fix and reduce battery life to make it work.
