The blanket is great, the controller sucks

The blanket feels nice, on preheat it heats up quickly, and it seems to do a decent job of controlling temperature.Unfortunately the controller is horrible. As has been frequently commented, to start with, it is too bloody bright. You might think that it is obvious that having a light bright enough to read by might not be the best for something that people use when they are sleeping. Other electric blankets will turn the light off after a bit, some might even let you dim them. But, nope, if the blanket is on the LEDs on the controllers (both of them) are bright enough to keep you awake if you don't, as someone suggested, throw a sock over them. Though I used a T-shirt, pillow or blanket. I just put a dimming sticker on mine today, I hope that'll tone it down enough. The controller itself has the basic functions, on/off, set, settable timer to turn itself off, and preheat. I assume that whoever tested this thing out only ever did so in a brightly lit lab, because where the temp and delay settings work at a retina searing brightness, none of the other controls are lit. Almost like they didn't consider that people would use electric blankets in the dark, and maybe want to adjust the temperature in the middle of the night.Speaking of setting the temperature, it's not just a case of bumping it up or down with the +/- arrows you have to press set once, but not twice, though three or five times will work, then you can hit the +/- keys to adjust the temp, rather than the shutoff delay.I live in a funky old house, with no heat in the bedroom. I like to preheat my bed before crawling in, at which point I dial it down to a low setting for the rest of the evening. The good news is that the controller does have a preheat button. The bad news is that the preheat button simply maxes out the temperature setting, so if I want to preheat my bed, I turn it on, press preheat, then when I want to go to bed I have press set, then press the - key 8 or 9 times. The awkwardness of setting the blanket wouldn't be so bad, except that every time it turns off, it loses its settings, so you have to go through the whole song and dance again the next night. The design of this controller should be in every User Interface textbook to show exactly how not to do this. I'm too lazy to return this blanket and go through all the bother of trying to find one that doesn't suck, and it does keep the bed warm at night, but I doubt I'll ever buy anything made by bedsure again. As to the people who test electric blankets, do they actually try sleeping with them? Or do they just fiddle with the controls for a couple minutes in a conference room between meetings? How did this thing ever get favorable reviews?

Pros
  • The dual control feature ensures that both you and your partner can enjoy a perfectly heated blanket without any disputes over the temperature
Cons
  • The controls may not be intuitive for all users.
