I work on disabled vehicles in the wild - highways, parking lots, etc. It's hard to tell where I kneel before to change a tire. I never feel pavement or gravel or anything with them. It's easy not to notice they're being worn at all. When you're in the car, you can see how your pants are tied between the straps behind the knees. Designers can't help it, but it lets you know you're wearing them. It's been four months in use now and I've found that I have to tighten the straps to get tighter as the elastic stretches, so expect six months to a year of intermittent use before the elastic is removed. At least in my experience - I don't wear them all day every day, although I do.
