I included this for convenience. I was tired of checking on the baby at night without a not too bright night light. So for me it was necessary. The light is not bright at all. Comes with a light strip on the back so you just need to put the batteries in. I will say that the swan moves down a bit when you pull the cord, but I'm sure this can be fixed by screwing it into the wall more tightly. However, I don't mind using two hands and switching positions.
