I am an advocate of safety while the baby is sleeping. This is the only mattress I have been able to find that is actually as firm as newborns need it to be. Mine looks just like the picture. It doesn't seem to have different levels of stiffness on each side, but that doesn't bother me. It's VERY tight in my Delta mini crib, but I'm ok with that too - it's foam so it can be squeezed in! And that just means less chance of baby parts getting stuck inside. It's also so cozy that any sheets you put inside stay in place. I purchased the Luvable Friends Crib Transfer Sheet, blue, and it was perfect for the depth of this mattress. The mattress crunches when you move on it, but I think if I put a mattress pad under the sheet it's not a problem.
