My mother-in-law's old ice pick fell apart completely and neither glue nor tape could fix it. Despite having an ice maker and freezer and no longer having to break blocks of ice, she failed to punch holes in her ice cubes, or maybe she just missed the thrill of piercing something—who knows. We bought her this one because it looked like her old one. It's well made and should last as long as your old one. When we gave it to her, the sparkle in her eyes reminded me of Norman Bates in Psycho, but so far she's only used it on her box of ice cubes.
