I have had the opportunity to use these straps on two international trips as well as many trips within the country over the past four years. I haven't had any problems with the locking mechanism for the most part. It was a little sticky at times, but for the most part I found that if I'm firm and careful I can open it without too much trouble as long as the lock is set correctly. However, by using the length strap I can compress the bag just enough to meet the size requirements for traveling with a bag. I also feel very secure with those two straps holding my luggage tight. Overall I think they were worth it. Please note that if you really want to save weight, you may find a lighter option. These straps are built for heavy use, which means they add a few ounces to your luggage.
